May Is Mental Health Month |
Mental Health America (MHA) and their affiliates across the country observe May as Mental Health Month and this year’s theme is “Look Around, Look Within” which asks us to consider every part of our environment and its effect on our mental health and well-being. In the bleeding disorders community there are many internal and external factors that can contribute to a decrease in mental well-being and an increase in stress and depression, including chronic joint pain, frequent medical visits, and ready access to needed services. VHF is dedicated to helping individuals live a mentally healthy life and we believe that taking care of the mind and spirit is as important as taking care of the body. One of the ways we do this is to offer programs that support creating bonds with your community while connecting with the outdoors.

National Women's Health Week |
National Women’s Health Week is May 14-20, 2023 and was established to encourage women and girls to make their health a priority. The theme for this year is, “Women’s Health, Whole Health: Prevention, Care and Wellbeing.” Women personify many roles in our lives and two out of every three caregivers in the United States are women. Women who are caregivers have a greater risk for poor physical and mental health. Preventive care can keep disease away or detect problems early so that treatment is more effective.
To improve your physical and mental health, you can: Get regular checkups, including a yearly well-woman exam.
Get active, prioritize your mental health, and learn how to cope with stress.
Did you know that the VHF Terry Lamb Enrichment Scholarship (for individuals living with an inherited bleeding disorder and their immediate family and/or household members) can be used for any program that enhances one’s self-esteem and overall health? Important Updates Regarding Medicaid and CHIP Eligibility Reviews |
As you may have heard, Medicaid and CHIP programs are re-starting eligibility reviews. Community members may receive letters, emails, or other communications from these public insurance programs. It’s important that you respond promptly. States may initiate coverage terminations with some starting as early as April 1, for people who don’t respond or who are no longer eligible for coverage. |
Research Funded By The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) |
NHF is dedicated to finding cures for inheritable blood disorders and to preventing the complications of these disorders through research, education, and advocacy enabling people and families to thrive. As part of that mission, NHF has established a number of fellowship programs to support research and encourage clinicians to specialize in bleeding disorders. Go here for a closer look at NHF’s fellowship programs and go here to learn more about NHF funded research projects.

The HELP Copays Act Moves Forward – Now In The Senate As Well As In The House |
Protections for people who rely on copay assistance are a top advocacy priority for the bleeding disorders community. That effort advanced in April with the introduction of a Senate version (S.1375) of the HELP Copays Act: legislation which would ensure that copay assistance is counted toward a plan holder’s deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. Please use HFA’s Legislative Action Center to urge your lawmakers to support this important bill!
