2019 HACA/VHF Young Adult Retreat

JOIN US FOR OUR FIRST EVER YOUNG ADULT RETREAT! A weekend of connection and learning for young adults that are faced with similar challenges. Join us for a chance to develop tools for self-advocacy and continued learning. What to expect: Opportunities for growth and skill development through interactive sessions on navigating the insurance landscape, do’s and don’ts of career success, disclosure, time for relationship building, and more. » RSVP here by July 15th

For young adults aged 18–24 who live within HACA/VHF territory and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have a bleeding disorder
  • Are the sibling of someone with a bleeding disorder
  • Have a parent/caregiver with a bleeding disorder

If a hotel room is requested then young adult must be 21 or older or have a parent/caregiver in attendance. Overnight accommodations at The Founder’s Inn will be available on Friday, August 9th and Saturday, August 10th. Educational programs, scheduled meals, community event, and overnight accommodations are provided at no cost for constituents that live in the HACA/VHF coverage area.

There is a $25 fee per registration. If you are a young adult 21 and older and you are paying for yourself and the fee is a barrier for you to be able to attend please check “pay by check” on the payment form and email heather@vahemophilia.org to discuss options.

Friday, August 9th

6:30 pm: Educational dinner at The Founders Inn | Speaker: Edgar Martinez, Hemophilia A Patient Educator, Octapharma USA

Topic: “My Hemophilia Journey” Born in the US Virgin Islands, Edgar moved to Florida where he was first diagnosed with Hemophilia A at the age of 10. In this presentation Edgar will discuss his journey living with hemophilia and his involvement in the community. Edgar will facilitate a discussion around building a support system from personal experiences.

Saturday, August 10th 

9:00 am: Breakfast is open to significant others, immediate family members and/or household members of participating young adults(s).

10:00 am – 4:15 pm: Educational sessions for young adults, lunch will be provided. *No scheduled sessions or meals planned for significant others, immediate family members and/or household members of participating young adult(s)*

Sunday, August 11th

9:00 am – 12:00 pm Community Event | The Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium.

*Community Event is optional and open to significant others, immediate family members and/or household members of participating young adults(s).*

Get active with your bleeding disorders community and engage in the health benefits of zip-lining and climbing! This fun and educational activity engages participants in overcoming perceived limitations, increasing self-confidence, and recognizing personal strengths and limitations. This amazing aerial forest park features climbing and zip lining through majestic trees near the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center’s Marsh Pavilion. Take to the treetops on 16 trails that weave between tree platforms on the 6-acre site. There is no fee to attend this event and lunch will be provided.
